Event Description:

The “Viva Jazz” trio will perform at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.

“Viva Jazz” is comprised of Lauren Rongo, flute; Arlene Pritchard McDaniel, piano; and Terry Newman, bass. The trio plays standard jazz, mostly bebop style. Their latest performance was at Brooklyn Boyz in Bay City.

Flutist Lauren Rongo graduated from Michigan State University in 1972 with a music education/ performance degree. After graduation, she moved to New York City where she played in several classical groups including New York Sinfonia; Brooklyn Philharmonic; and Hoffmeister Winds. Rongo joined Nova Jazz in 1978, and with her husband Tony won the Eubie Blake Jazz Award in New York City. She has played in the Midland Symphony Orchestra, Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, and the Valley Wind Quintet. She is a member of the Saginaw Eddy Band and Viva Jazz and resides in Essexville, Mich.

Arlene McDaniel is an experienced pianist in the field of jazz, performing and teaching in the Mid-Michigan area and beyond for over 35 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music theory and composition from Michigan State University in 1984. McDaniel performs a wide variety of musical engagements including clubs and festivals, playing as a solo artist as well as in small groups and big bands. She is on the faculty at the MSU Community Music School and is an adjunct instructor in jazz piano at Hillsdale College, where she also is a member of the faculty jazz ensemble. She resides in Bath, Mich.

Terry Newman, bassist, has played at the Detroit/Montreaux Jazz Festival, as well as The New York and Greenwich Village jazz festivals. He has toured Europe, recorded several CD’s, and has worked as a musical production director. He is a Swartz Creek resident who has also found time to share his talent by serving as a bass instructor at the Flint Institute or Music.

“Viva Jazz” performance tickets are $10 for general admission, tickets for students with ID are $7.
