The Saginaw Promise and promotional partner, the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce will host an fundraising event, “An Evening with Darvin Ham” with special guest Mark Zimmerman. The event is being held on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Horizons Conference Center from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. Proceeds will benefit the Saginaw Promise programming and scholarships. Tickets will include the evening Reception, Dinner and Program ($125 per person).
Darvin Ham played for eight years in the NBA, won an NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons, and famously shattered a backboard with a slam dunk during the 1996 NCAA Tournament to help advance Texas Tech to the Sweet 16 and earned himself a cover on Sports Illustrated. Ham will share experiences and stories about growing up in Saginaw, his NCAA and NBA basketball careers, moving from player to coach and what it takes to recruit, coach and put together a winning team effort in a highly competitive sport.
Special guest Mark Zimmerman will speak about his career, which includes many years as General Manager of the Georgia World Congress Center, the 4th largest convention center in the country, which also houses the arenas where both the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Falcons play. Under Zimmerman’s leadership, the Center has hosted many of the Top 200 Trade Shows in the country, as well as the 1988 Democratic National Convention, 1994 and 2000 Super Bowls and several NCAA Final Four Basketball Championship events.
Both proudly refer to Saginaw as their hometown.
Since 2012, the Saginaw Promise has awarded $600,000 in scholarships to 447 scholars with a mission to make a positive difference in Saginaw by promoting and supporting postsecondary education through information, programming and “last dollar” scholarships for Saginaw’s graduating students.
