Mexican American civil rights pioneer Dr. Hector P. Garcia is remembered as a tireless champion for equal rights, education, and voting rights. In 1948, Garcia, a World War II veteran, founded the American G.I. Forum—a group aimed at promoting veterans’ rights. His role in the American civil rights movement resulted in important victories. While leading the civil rights struggle, Garcia also served as a medical doctor in Corpus Christi, providing much-needed medical care to the most in need. Garcia’s daughter, Cecilia Garcia Akers, shares her memories of Garcia and discusses his legacy in her book The Inspiring Life of Texan Dr. Hector P. Garcia. Akers will sign copies during a Meet the Author event.
