Event Description:

Did you know that genealogy is the second most common hobby in the United States with the advent of the popular websites Ancestry.com and 23andme; gardening is first on the list.

Most cancers occur by chance. However, 5-10% of cancers are hereditary and tend to run in families. In some families with a history of certain types of cancer; people may inherit abnormal genes that place them at greater risk of developing the disease.

Dr. Allison Jay, Board Certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics in Clinical Genetics, will be a keynote speaker at St. Mary’s of Michigan on Wednesday, October 4 to present Background on Hereditary Cancer and When to Consider Genetics.

The program is free and open to cancer survivors and community members interested in the topics of genealogy and cancer.

All are welcome to join Wednesday, October 4 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary's of Michigan Towne Centre - Conference Room. St. Mary’s of Michigan Towne Centre is located at 4599 Towne Centre Road on the corner of Towne Centre & Schust in Saginaw Township.

Dr. Jay works for the Cancer Genetics Program at St. John Hospital and the Van Elslander Cancer Center. She is certified in clinical genetics and medical biochemical genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics. Dr. Jay has special interest in breast cancer, colon cancer, and genetic syndromes. She received her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.
