Event Description:

Please join us for the opening reception of our newest exhibition “TRIUMPH: Portraits of Opposition; Fifty-One works by Jac Lahav,” on display March 9- June 9, 2018. The artist himself will be here to greet visitors and celebrate the exhibition’s opening. This event is FREE and open to the public, and light refreshments will be provided.

For Lahav, portraiture is a visual interrogation and analysis of identity. With his works, Lahav invites his audience to reflect upon interpretations of historical subjects in an age consumed by photography. Through developing a flat, multilayered, and often liquid approach to painting, Lahav projects his thinking on biography, identity, myth, and the veils of layer and meaning that are imbued in these ideas. By doing so, Lahav asks his audience to consider and reconsider what they know to be true about his subjects and apply the same thinking to their own surroundings as members of a collective culture.

Triumph: Portraits of Opposition uses Lahav’s works to examine oppression and opposition: two elements of humanity present from the beginning of recorded time. Whether presenting itself in the shape of politics, slavery, mental distress, or violence, prejudice and oppression have and continue to cause trauma and wounds that can never fully heal. In spite of this, triumph and achievement are a common thread woven through the stories found in this exhibition.
