Event Description:

Many older adults experience a fear of falling. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. St. Mary’s of Michigan Field Neurosciences Institute will host “A Matter of Balance: Stand Up To Falls” - a program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase balance and activity levels among older adults.

A Matter of Balance includes eight two-hour sessions for a small group led by a trained facilitator.

During the class, participants learn to:
• View falls as controllable
• Set goals for increasing activity
• Make changes to reduce fall risk at home
• Exercise to increase strength and balance

The program is designed to benefit community-dwelling older adults who are age 60 and older. Program activities include group discussion, problem-solving, skill building, assertiveness training, sharing practical solutions and exercise and balance training.

The program is free to attend. Sessions are on Mondays and Fridays from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at St. Mary’s of Michigan Towne Centre Conference Room located at 4599 Towne Centre in Saginaw Township.

To maximize outcomes, attendees are encouraged to attend all eight sessions:
Monday, September 10; Friday, September 14; Monday, September 17; Friday, September 21; Monday, September 24; Friday, September 28; Monday, October 1 and Friday October 5.

The fall session begins September 10. Registration is required; call (989) 497-3075 to sign up today.
