Event Description: Charter schools began as an experiment to improve public education. The theory was that these schools would operate outside of traditional public schools and would be free of the oversight and regulatory requirements constraining the current educational systems, in exchange for increased accountability and performance. These new educational programs would be incubators of innovation and spawn new educational methods, addressing the challenges plaguing traditional public schools. After 30 years of charter schools in Michigan, what do we know about the schools and their performance, and are they making a difference in the larger educational landscape? This presentation provides an update on charter schools in Michigan over the past three decades and explores key factors around charter school academic and operational performance.
