This farce centers on the cantankerous British novelist Charles Condomine. Charles has re-married but is - quite literally - haunted by the ghost of his late first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira who has been conjured up by a visiting “happy medium”, one Madame Arcati. As personalities clash, Charles’ current wife Ruth is accidentally killed, and she passes over only to join Elvira and the two “blithe spirits” haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity.
