Pit & Balcony Community Theatre continues to push the envelope with their After Dark brand this holiday season by presenting The Eight: Reindeer Monologues by Jeff Goode.
The Eight: Reindeer Monologues is a satire which explores themes of accountability and power through the lens of Santa’s reindeer. A satire uses irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like to expose, denounce or deride the folly or corruption of institutions, people, or social structures. After Santa is accused of assault, his eight reindeer each have a chance to share their account of the man and the scandal through monologues which range from dark and disturbing to laugh-out-loud funny - sometimes all at once.
“This is not your average holly-jolly holiday story,” director Trashan Donald says. “Satires like this remind us that it’s okay to laugh and find humor in the things that we all know are happening around us. It’s okay to let the darkness in the humor make you cringe while simultaneously making you belly laugh. It’s also important that we can find the moments that make us think and let them help us speak.”
The dark comedy features eight local volunteer actors each portraying one of the reindeer: Doc Less as Dasher, Mary Spadafore as Dancer, Josh Fick as Hollywood (aka Prancer), Jennifer Rohde as Vixen, Jake Pearsall as Comet, Justin Russell as Cupid, Matt Kehoe as Donner, and Brielle Myles-Williams as Blitzen. Donald has staged this series of monologues in a therapist’s office as each character works out his or her own truth about Santa.
“This is our second season presenting a Holiday After Dark production,” says Amy Spadafore, Managing Director of Pit & Balcony. “Our goal with these productions is to provide an adults-only night of entertainment at a time of year when those opportunities are often few and far between. We’ve even created a specialty cocktail to go along with the show.”
Performances of The Eight: Reindeer Monologues run December 8th and 9th at 8:30pm. The production is suitable for audiences aged 18and up and includes descriptions of sexual assault and assault of a minor.
The Eight: Reindeer Monologues is proudly presented in partnership with Advantage Office Cleaning.
