Mustard Seed Shelter opens registration for Sowing Seeds of Hope Golf Outing

Fourth annual golf event honors memory of former guest Jillian Paetz Brooks

Registration is officially open for Mustard Seed Shelter’s fourth “Sowing Seeds of Hope” golf outing, which will be held on Saturday, August 17, at Beech Hollow Golf Course in Freeland.

The 2023 outing raised more than $14,000 to support the shelter’s day-to-day operations, bringing the total raised over the outing’s first three years to nearly $50,000. This year’s event will again be in memory of Jillian Paetz Brooks, a beloved member of the Mustard Seed family who passed away in late 2021. Organizers have set an ambitious goal to raise $25,000.

Mustard Seed Shelter provides a welcoming, home environment where single women and women with children experiencing homelessness are able to rebuild their lives. Residents, called “guests,” are not given a time limit but the average stay is 3-6 months. During that time, staff and volunteers work with them one on one to develop a customized plan for success and connect them with community resources.

“On any given night here in Saginaw, there are around 350 unhoused individuals,” said Bartels Roe. “Countywide, those numbers are essentially tripled. The reasons why someone becomes unhoused are many and varied, and every story is unique. Our golf outing is a vital source of funding to support the work we do. At the same time, we are raising awareness about the complex issue of homelessness – and how it truly can touch every one of us.”
